Determining
the Number of Guests
Anyone who has planned a wedding recognizes that the guest
list can quickly grow to enormous proportions. At some point we will all feel
like we are reliving the scene from “Father of Bride” with our “A” list
and our “B” list. . . Those that will come and those that we will invite
knowing, to our great relief, that they probably won’t come.
There are three things that determine the size of the
guest list:
- The
number of friends (in this case the fewer the better J).
- The
space available at both the ceremony site and the reception site.
- Your
budget. (Depending on the time
day, your location, and the food you are serving a meal will cost $16.00 -
$60.00 a plate.) It is
traditional for the bride and groom to invite the same number of people.
But with the commonsense approach, if the bride’s family has twice
as many relatives, friends, and acquaintances and the budget can support
them, then, I say, by all means, invite everyone who will share your joy.
If there is a budget or space limitations then you might have to
instill a few rules. Some
of these might be:
- Not allowing babies, or young children, unless these children play an
important part in your life.
- Invite colleagues and neighbors to the ceremony only, and not to the
reception.
- Begin your list by listing the people that are closet to you and then
working toward the outer edges of your social group.
- If it is important to you to have everybody celebrate with you,
consider changing the style so that it is affordable to celebrate with more
people. You might consider
having a cake and punch reception for everyone, and then a smaller, intimate
reception for those that are closest to you.
